Student Council

 

Student Council is a student government organization which gives students a voice in determining school activities and environment. It helps promote activities for the entire student body Dhahran High School and fosters a positive climate throughout the school. Each year, students interested in participating in Student Council are asked to give a speech to their classmates. Students from each grade are elected to represent the interests of their grade and the school as a whole. Activities organized by Student Council include events such as Battle of the Bands, Spirit Weeks, Pep Rallies, Dances, Student Appreciation Days and International Day.

 

National Honor Society

 

The National Honor Society Chapter at Dhahran High School recognizes sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have demonstrated excellence not only in the area of scholarship, but also in service, leadership and character. Once a member of NHS, students are required to uphold the standards of NHS and continue active service through participation in school and community projects. Each year NHS sponsors fundraising events such as Homeless Night and the DHS Talent Show in addition to weekly pizza sales. Thousands of dollars are raised and donated yearly by NHS to charitable organizations around the world.

 

 

Tutoring Club

 

Tutoring Club allows students who need additional help in a given subject(s) an opportunity to work with another student after school. To join tutoring club you can either sign up to provide help for students in need or receive help in specific subject areas.

 

Drama Club

 

DHS Drama Department produces the best live theater in Saudi Arabia.  Students make up every aspect of putting together top notch (often Pulitzer-Prize winning) plays from make-up and set design… from technical director to outstanding acting.  Thespians are challenged to produce excellent, precise, and creative productions from huge musicals such as Beauty and the Beast to classics such as Our Town…from the suspenseful in And Then There Were None to the hilarious in Arsenic and Old Lace.  Being in a DHS theatrical production is the most demanding and highest level of commitment of the DHS activities.

 

Habitat for Humanity

 

The Dhahran High School Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is affiliated with the Global village Organization, and help finance on building houses for families to natives in countries in Asia, Europe and Africa.  A trip is planned each year to one of the countries where global villages build homes.  These trips include students of any grade and teacher chaperones who wish to visit these countries for the purpose of building homes. 

 

Model United Nations

 

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, current events, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. Participating students adopt the role of diplomates from a variety of countries and engage in diplomatic efforts to draft resolutions pretaining to challenging international issues.  This club has been on the DHS campus since the school's inception and involves around 75 different students in as many as 6 local and international conferences a year.

 

Debate Club

 

"Speech is the mirror of soul; as a man speaks, so is he". Debate club is a subsidiary of Speech, an elective  of  DHS Curriculum. The club offers students opportunities to better themselves in presenting claims and arguments effectively before any audience. In other words, students learn how to “fight with finesse”; training includes making propositions, researching and formulating effective claims, fortified with statistics, evidence, logic and reason. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn to be perfect presenters.

 

Stinger

 

The Stinger is DHS’s first and only student-run newspaper. It is designed to be for the students, of the students and by the students. It runs bi-monthly and is put together by a group of very dedicated individuals under the guidance of a DHS staff member. The academic year 2009-2010 was the newspaper’s first full year. The paper is a hot spot for anything ranging from current events around the school, to editorials about pretty much anything, to tips about how to prepare for upcoming situations and to updates from all the organizations at school. 

 

Oriental Dance Class

 

This fun activity will give the students a chance to experience the Arabic culture. Basics of belly dancing will be taught to girls who have the desire to challenge themselves in something beyond just school and sports. It's a great opportunity for students to appreciate and realize the beauty of the Arabic culture and dance away to the funky beats. Girls will have an opportunity to polish up their skills and have an insight into the real oriental Dance!

 

Sizzlin' Scorpions Cheerleading/Dance Team

 

Try-outs are held each spring for the selection of the cheer squad.  The team practices throughout the year and performs at assemblies, International Day and is present at most of the school's athletic contests promoting positive school spirit.

 

DHS Band

 

DHS's band is part of the Visual and Performing Arts sector.  As an advanced yearlong performance ensemble, the class focuses on preparation and performance of contemporary and tradtional concert band literature. Included are individual and ensemble performance techniques, sight-reading, music vocabulary and fundamental aspects of music theory and history.   The ensemble participates in two fine arts concerts each year, as well as performing at the DHS graduation in June.  Students may use their own instrument or borrow one from the school for the year.

 

Jazz Band

 

DHS's Jazz Band is part of the afterschool activities program. Focusing on individual and group performance, the ensemble prepares traditional and contemporary jazz charts, as well as developing each musician's  improvisation skills.  Members are welcome from all grade levels, and on all instruments.

 

Technology Club

 

The primary goal of this club is to train students in various areas of technology. These students will be able to assist teachers and peers when they run into technological difficulties.  Skills that will be covered are setting up a movie, projector/audio problems and network connections .  These club members will also offer assistance in technology  set up for assemblies and after school activities.  These students will be able to hold technology training workshops for DHS staff/students in the future.

 

Chess Club

 

Exercise for your brain in a fun environment.  We will focus on fundamental strategy for controlling the board and creating advantage.  Club meets Saturdays at lunch and after school in H3.  All high school students welcome. 

 

Wrestling Club

 

Wrestling is an intense sport with complex moves. In this club you will learn the basic moves, starting positions, stances and some professional wrestling techniques of  American High school wrestling. This activity will be offered to boys only.

 

Prom Committee

 

The Prom Committee consists of a group of junior and senior students whose primary focus is to host student-centered activities that help raise money for prom. Some of these activities include a fashion show, a senior auction, a dance contest, and bake sales. The committee meets about once a week to share ideas and plan.

 

Running Club

 

Whether you are an avid runner who puts in 10 miles a week, or are just becoming interested in your personal fitness level, the running club is a great way to challenge yourself personally.  The club does train for a meet held on the Aramco camp typically in late January.  After the meet, the running club continues running until the weather becomes to warm to run.  Fitness, eating a healthy diet, and personal goal setting are also a part of this club.
